Ghana denied boarding compensation: what you're owed for overbooking
What are my rights if an airline overbooks my flight in Ghana?
Under the GCAA Consumer Protection Directives, if an airline expects to deny boarding due to overbooking (or an emergency requiring a sudden aircraft change), it must first call for volunteers to surrender their reservation in exchange for agreed benefits. Only if not enough volunteers come forward can the airline deny boarding to remaining passengers against their will — and if it does, compensation is immediate and non-negotiable.
Legal status of the 2019 GCAA Consumer Protection Directives
The compensation amounts below come from the GCAA Consumer Protection Directives published in June 2019, which reference the former Civil Aviation Act 678. Ghana has since enacted the Civil Aviation Act 2024 (Act 1120). Nothing publicly available indicates these amounts have been revised since — but verify with the GCAA (gcaa.com.gh) before relying on a specific figure to file a claim.

Distance is calculated using the last destination at which the denied boarding delays your arrival after the scheduled time. Compensation is paid in the Ghana Cedi equivalent, at the official bank exchange rate, by cash, electronic bank transfer, bank order or cheque — or, only with your signed agreement, in travel vouchers or other services.
Can the airline halve my compensation?
Yes, in one specific case: if you're rerouted to your final destination on an alternative flight whose arrival time doesn't exceed the original scheduled arrival by more than 2 hours (domestic) or 3 hours (international), the airline may reduce the compensation above by 50%.
What else am I entitled to, beyond the cash compensation?
Denied boarding also triggers:
- Choice between refund and rerouting — full refund within 7 days, immediate rerouting, or rerouting at a later date of your choosing (subject to seat availability).
- Right to care — meals and refreshments proportionate to waiting time, hotel accommodation if an overnight stay becomes necessary, transport to and from it, plus two free calls, faxes or emails.
These rights apply on top of, not instead of, the cash compensation.
What if I volunteer to give up my seat?
If you respond to the airline's call for volunteers and accept its offer, you are assisted under the care provisions above, but the fixed compensation table does not automatically apply — your rights then depend on the terms you agreed with the airline when you volunteered. Read the offer carefully before accepting.
How do I claim if I'm denied boarding in Ghana?
Compensation for involuntary denied boarding should be paid immediately by the airline at the airport. If it isn't, or is refused: complain to the airline's consumer protection desk first, then escalate to the GCAA (Complaint Form or consumer@caa.com.gh) if unresolved. See our full complaint procedure in the main Ghana guide.
