Ryanair cabin baggage now paid in 2026: avoid the €60 gate fee

In 2026, the bill is clear: Ryanair, Wizz Air, Transavia and Vueling have made cabin baggage paid beyond a small backpack. At the boarding gate, a bag not paid online costs up to €60. It's legal, contractual — and it has become one of the main ancillary revenue streams for low-cost carriers.

Good news: with the right reflexes, you avoid this extra cost. And if the airline goes beyond its terms (flight delayed, cancelled, or compliant baggage refused), you have concrete remedies.

What changed in 2025-2026

Until 2018, Ryanair allowed two free cabin bags (large + small). In 2024, it dropped to one standard cabin bag. Since 2025, the rule has tightened:

1. The small underseat backpack — free

This is your absolute right. An urban backpack (school bag, compact gym bag, laptop sleeve) fits the 40 × 20 × 25 cm allowance on Ryanair. No charge is possible as long as you stay within these dimensions.

Practical tip: compressible hiking backpacks (Osprey Daylite, Decathlon Forclaz 30L) easily fit the sizer once well packed. A rigid backpack 2 cm too big will be refused.

2. The standard cabin bag — paid (€12-35)

Wheeled cabin case 55 × 40 × 20 cm, up to 10 kg. This is the middle option. Price varies with route and timing: the later you buy, the more expensive. In 2026, expect €12-15 for an intra-European flight booked early, €30-35 for a peak-time flight booked the day before.

3. Hold baggage — always paid

10 kg or 20 kg hold bag. Essential for long trips or diaspora travellers bringing back products. Always book online: paying at the counter is 50-80% more expensive.

5 reflexes to avoid the €60 surcharge

1. Check your bag dimensions BEFORE leaving for the airport — with a tape measure, at home. Not at the gate.
2. Add the standard cabin bag to your booking at purchase — it's 3 to 5 times cheaper than at the gate.
3. Travelling as a couple on Ryanair: only one of you pays for the standard cabin bag; you share. Saves €12-35.
4. Hybrid bag: a large soft backpack, compressed, fits the underseat allowance once packed tight. Test it at home first.
5. Online check-in is mandatory: forgetting online check-in = €55 extra on Ryanair, on top of the baggage. Do it as soon as it opens (24-48h before flight).

Wizz Air, Transavia, Vueling: the same rules

All these carriers aligned their policies in 2025-2026: one small underseat bag free, the rest paid. The few-centimetre gaps don't change the principle: no online payment = €60-70 at the gate.

What if you are charged €60 even though your bag is compliant?

It happens — especially at the end of the boarding queue, when the agent tries to empty saturated overhead bins. If you are certain your bag fits the allowance:

1. Demand a public measurement against the airline's official sizer (present at counter and gate).
2. Film or photograph the bag inside the sizer. This is your main evidence.
3. Keep all tickets: boarding pass, €60 receipt, gate ticket.
4. Within 7 days of the flight, write to the airline to claim a refund (registered letter + customer service email).
5. If refused: free MTV mediation (Travel and Tourism Mediation) in France, or DGAC for France-departing flights, or the equivalent National Enforcement Body (NEB) in your EU country.

Common case: Ryanair charges baggage at the gate even though the bag is compliant, because the agent decides to optimise loading. Photo inside the sizer = you win. Without a photo, it's your word against theirs.

Regulation (EC) 261/2004 applies to all airlines operating to or from the EU, including Ryanair, Wizz, Transavia, Vueling. Low-cost doesn't mean low-rights.
