The cause
The delay must be attributable to the airline. A genuinely extraordinary circumstance exempts it; a routine technical fault or a knock-on effect on the aircraft's rotation does not.
Key point: what counts is the delay recorded on arrival in Abidjan, not at departure. A flight that left 2h late but arrived 3h15 late still qualifies for compensation.

This list of airlines and flights is not exhaustive and flight numbers can be changed by airlines at any time: always check your own flight number. The Paris-Abidjan distance (4,710 km) and Brussels-Abidjan distance are well over the 3,500 km threshold, which places this route at the maximum tier of €600. *On a single ticket with a connection, compensation is calculated as the great-circle distance between the original departure airport and the final arrival, never leg by leg or on the layover (CJEU, Bossen ruling, 7 September 2017, C-559/16).
What decides everything is the flag and the direction: an EU carrier (Air France, Corsair, Brussels Airlines) is covered both ways. A non-EU carrier (Air Côte d'Ivoire, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines) is only covered departing the European Union. That is why a Paris to Abidjan flight on Air Côte d'Ivoire is compensable, while the Abidjan to Paris return on the same airline is not.
Firsthand account: Paris-Abidjan flight in business class (Corsair)
The founder of Robin des Airs has flown to Côte d'Ivoire himself several times, including a business class flight on Corsair, with a stopover in Cotonou before Abidjan. A very pleasant experience on the cabin side, with attentive service.
Félix-Houphouët-Boigny Airport is a manageable size and relatively close to the city centre, which makes journeys easier. On the way back, however, several flights to Europe (Air France, Corsair) can depart at very similar times: space at check-in and security is limited, crowding builds up quickly, and it is not always obvious where to queue. Practical advice: arrive early.
Visa for French nationals: it must be requested in advance and can take several days to be issued; it is then collected on the spot, on arrival. Without this visa being processed, being turned back on arrival is possible. Always check the current entry requirements before travelling, as the rules can change.
A personal safety tip, unrelated to EC 261: avoid carrying a bag for someone you do not know well, even out of kindness. A suitcase that looks harmless (clothes, shoes) can contain something else without your knowledge, and since the bag is checked in under your name, you are the one accountable if it is inspected. The safest reflex is to say no.
Large family? Compensation adds up per passenger
Compensation is due per passenger, never per booking. On a Europe-Abidjan flight delayed more than 3 hours, a family of four represents €2,400, and a family of six €3,600. The price paid for each ticket does not factor in: a promotional fare is entitled to the same fixed amount as a full-fare ticket.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Abidjan-Paris return flight with Air Côte d'Ivoire covered?
No. Air Côte d'Ivoire is an Ivorian carrier, not an EU one. EC 261 only applies to it for flights departing the European Union. The Paris to Abidjan leg is covered, the return is not with this airline. To be covered both ways, choose Air France, Corsair or Brussels Airlines.
What is the compensation amount for a delayed Europe-Abidjan flight?
€600 per passenger. The Paris-Abidjan distance (4,710 km) and Brussels-Abidjan distance are well over the 3,500 km threshold, which places this route at the maximum tier regardless of the European city of departure.
My connection in Istanbul or Addis Ababa made me miss my flight to Abidjan, am I covered?
It depends on where the ticket originated. If the journey started at an EU airport on a single ticket, the airline operating the connection remains responsible for the whole journey through to Abidjan, even if the problem occurs on the stopover leg.
The airline refused my claim, can I still make a claim?
Yes. A refusal does not extinguish the claim. Many refusals rest on extraordinary circumstances that do not qualify as such under Court of Justice of the European Union case law. An already-refused case can still be reviewed.
Does travelling as a family to Abidjan increase the amount?
Yes, compensation is due per passenger. A family of four represents up to €2,400, a family of six up to €3,600, regardless of the price paid for each ticket.
How far back can I claim for an old Abidjan flight?
In France, the claim is time-barred after five years from the day the rights holder knew, or should have known, the facts allowing them to act (Article 2224 of the Civil Code). A 2022 flight therefore remains claimable until 2027.
Do I have anything to pay or advance?

Do a strike or a technical fault cancel my rights?
Not automatically. A routine technical fault or an aircraft arriving late from its previous flight generally do not exempt the airline. An internal strike by the airline's own staff does not exempt it either, unlike an air traffic controllers' strike. The exact cause must be verified.
